Even though Matthew McConaughey has typically stayed out of the political sphere, people are now pushing him to run for the position of governor of Texas.

Keep scrolling to see why Stephen Colbert thinks the position could use someone like McConaughey...

Matthew McConaughey has some big plans.

He is now considering running for the position of governor in his home state of Texas and he has even gone on to explain why the idea would be good for not only him, but the residents there.

Now, McConaughey isn't usually known for his politics.

The fifty-year-old performer first rose to fame in cult '90s slacker comedy, Dazed and Confused, as the adorable David Wooderson. His performance in the movie was basically catchphrase central.

McConaughey took longer to reach his full potential.

Through the late nineties and early noughties, McConaughey starred in a wide array of slightly cheesy romantic comedies - though his charm and appeal were still impossible to deny.

He did eventually move into blockbuster territory.

McConaughey has had smaller roles in a wide array of truly massive Hollywood movies, including 2013's?The Wolf of Wall Street?and 2011's?Bernie.

This led McConaughey into more dramatic roles.

In 2013, he starred in?The Dallas Buyers Club,?a role which earned him a Golden Globe, Critics Choice Award, SAG Award, and an Oscar. His role in acclaimed television series, True Detective, further cemented him as one of the most talented actors working today.

McConaughey's acting range is hard to deny.

Since his re-emergence on the dramatic acting scene, he's starred in movies such as Interstellar?(2014),?The Sea of Trees?(2015),?Free State of Jones,?Gold?(2016) and?The Dark Tower (2017).

But, in spite of these more "serious" roles ...

McConaughey has managed to continually retain a sense of humor within his work, often taking on more lighthearted roles - including in raunchy comedy, Magic Mike, in 2012.

It seems like there's nothing that McConaughey can't do...

Well, apart from talk politics, that is!

That doesn't mean others aren't pushing him towards the idea though.

On last night's episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, the talk show host brought up the topic of running for governor of Texas. "Is it true?" He asks. "That you might consider running for governor in Texas?"

The question itself got everyone talking...

"Mr. McConaughey... It's a simple answer. Yes or hell yes?"

Upon hearing this, the A-List actor starts laughing but does not reply directly to the question. However, Colbert keeps pushing.

But the actor's reply was disappointing.

"I have no plans to do that right now," McConaughey says. "I'll say this... Look, right now, no. I don't get politics. Politics seems to be a broken business. Politics needs re-defining in its purpose."

So while he might be taking on leadership positions, the governor of Texas might not be in his future right now.
